Outdoor burners are a must for all-grain home brewers. They are necessary to be bring your water to a boil and keep your wort to temperature. Bayou Classic is known for their home brew products and their SS84 Stainless Steel Brew Stove with Windscreen is a quality outdoor burner.
Like most of their products, Bayou Classic’s floor burner is designed with the intention of brewing time and time again. It is a solid design that resists weather and heavy use wear.
The SS84 Stainless Steel Brew Stove is made to be an outdoor burner that will last a long time. It is of stainless steel construction and has a wide sturdy base. The burner stands just above 13 inches tall and has a wide range measuring 16 by 16 inches. The low center of gravity and stability of the stand is a must. This way, you won’t worry about your kettle tipping over and losing your product.
The burner works similarly to a propane grill as it has a 36-inch stainless braided hose that can hook directly to a propane tank. Where the hose attaches to the propane tank is a PSI regulator that can be adjusted up to 10 PSI. You can use this to regulate the boil of your brew and tune in a blue flame.
The burner is also surrounded by a stainless steel windscreen. This screen prevents wind from disturbing the heat dispersion of your flames and allows you to more easily control the flame. The windscreen is a must for outdoor brewers.
The entire burner weighs about 20 pounds which adds to the sturdiness and durability. However, because it isn’t overly heavy, it is easy to move and store away when it isn’t in use.
- Stainless Steel Frame
- Stainless Steel Windscreen
- 10 PSI Adjustable Regulator
- 36 Inch Stainless Braided Hose
- Low BTU output
- No unique features
- Sits low to the ground
- Ideal for small batches only
For what it is, Bayou Classic’s SS84 Stainless Steel Brew Stone with Windscreen is a solid burner. However, it isn’t for someone that is intending on doing medium to large batches. It is only ideal for 10 to 15 gallon batches.
Also, the low BTU output will make it difficult if you are using a mash tun with a lot of grain. It will have a difficult time keeping the rolling boils you may need and it may fail in high winds.
While the low center of gravity is good for stability, it is not good for ergonomics. We all know how heavy a kettle can be and how difficult it can be to manage when it is at boiling temperatures. I would prefer it was a bit taller.
Overall, this burner is a great deal. I am confident that you won’t have any issues as it is easy to setup and operate. It is perfect for small batch brewer’s and those that are testing the waters into all-grain brewing.
If you are worried about lifting your kettle’s off of the ground, I recommend placing it on a sturdy table. This way you won’t throw out your back and will have a much easier time with transfers.
I highly recommend this burner as it will last you a long time and it can be easily doubled as a turkey fryer.
