It’s no secret, a jockey box is definitely one of the best ways to turn your keg portable and serve ice-cold beer at any outdoor event or party without breaking the bank.
Like I described in the main article, there are two different types of jockey boxes, coil and cold plate. If you’re able to keep your keg below 55°F, a cold plate jockey box is your best bet! If your keg will most likely be room temperature, I would go with the coil type.

Coil Jockey Box
When choosing the coil type, you’ll have to choose the actual length of the coils, as well as how many taps you’d like on your jockey box. The shorter coils, which are around 50’-70’ are designed for low to moderate use and will need a little bit of time in between every couple of drinks to rejuvenate. If you’re going to be constantly filling up cups and don’t have time to wait around for rejuvenation, you’ll want a longer coil that is at least 120’. When using the coil type, you’ll want a good mixture of ice and water.
Cold Plate Jockey Box
The cold plate cooler is the most efficient option but it does require your keg to be 55°F or cooler in order to reach desired temperature. This is because the coils that are located inside of the cold plate are much shorter than the coil type cooler, which means less contact with a cold surface. Unlike the coil cooler, which requires the use of ice mixed with water, the cold plate cooler runs off of just ice. This means you’ll need to keep the drain open on your Jockey Box so the water can drain as the ice melts.
In addition to the actual Jockey Box, you’ll need:
- CO2 Tank
- Beer line
- Air line
- Bags of ice
- Keg of Beer! Duh 🙂
HomeBrewStuff – Stainless Steel Mini Jockey Box
If you’ve been to the Home Brew Stuff website you’ll see that they actually sell a huge variety of homebrew products and accessories, including a good variety of jockey boxes. This includes jockey boxes ranging from a single tap system all the way up to a large 4-tap system for large parties or events.
The Mini Jockey Box is 14qt cooler that comes with a high quality 25’ stainless steel coil that is just long enough to give your beer a good chill. You’ll also want to wait a minute or two in between pours to ensure you get a cold one. I would also recommend putting your keg in a bucket full of ice since the coil is on the shorter side. It’s very common for these smaller compact coolers to have shorter coils. The Mini Jockey Box also comes with a stainless steel faucet.
This is a great option if affordability and portability is key!
JockeyBox.com – Double Faucet Beer keg Cooler
Jockeybox.com is a web-based company that uses Amazon.com as a marketplace to sell all of their products. This means fast affordable shipping, customer reviews and a great return policy. Jockeybox.com has two different jockey boxes in their lineup, a single tap version and a double tap version. Since the price difference isn’t that large, I prefer the double tap option.
The double faucet jockey box is a 48qt cooler that comes loaded with two 50’ stainless steel coils. This is my suggested minimum length when going with a coil type jockey box and should allow you to pour a few cold beers at a time. Everything in the box is preassembled and ready to rock as soon as it arrives.
This is a quality double faucet model from a trusted brand!

Their 48 Qt. Coil Cooler model comes with a long 120ft coil for non-stop pours, which is perfect for a large party that demands ice cold beer without a break. The faucet is made from solid brass that is coated with high quality chrome for a lasting finish. Micromatic also makes a dual faucet version for a multiple keg setup.
Northern Brewer – Cold Plate Jockey Box, 2 Faucets
Northern Brewer is personally one of my websites for homebrew supplies. They have great customer service and also have a great selection of beer equipment, beer recipe kits and ingredients, as well as kegging and bottling equipment. Northern Brewer also includes a two-circuit cold plate jockey box.
Their dual faucet cold plate jockey box is a 48 Qt. cooler with a 10” x 15” aluminum cold plate that contains 18’ of stainless steel ¼” tubing. This is a high quality but inexpensive option if you’re looking for a cold plate style jockey box. If you can keep you keg below 55°F you’ll definitely be happy with the results.
