Finding a decent gas burner for brewing that won’t cost you an arm and a leg can be difficult. Typically, cheap burners end up sacrificing heat output and are only good for 5-10 gallon batches.
The Dark Star Burner 2.0 offers a solution to this problem. It is the big brother of the previous popular seller from Northern Brewer HomeBrew Supply.
Dark Star Burner 2.0: General Features
The Dark Star Burner 2.0 is an easy to use outdoor propane burner for brewing. Instructions are not included but no assembly is required, and it only requires a light. It is a floor burner and has been upgraded from its previous version to be a viable all-grain burner.
The Dark Star Burner 2.0 has been upgraded with an additional 11,000 BTUs bringing it to a total of 65,000. With this kind of heat output, you can bring 5 gallons to a boil in minutes and a 20 gallon batch to a boil in under 15. This makes it an excellent candidate for larger batches and gives you a competitive edge.
This homebrew burner has also been upgraded to include a wind guard. Wind guards are essential when brewing outside. They prevent flames from being blown out and concentrate heat under the kettle. The Dark Star Burner’s wind guard surrounds the diameter of the flames and prevents blowouts in high winds.
With everything you’re getting, you might expect to pay an arm and a leg for this burner, but the Dark Star is remarkably affordable. There aren’t many burners with this kind of power and quality that can match it. You can find these kind of products here: www.52brews.com/top-5-brew-burners
- 6-inch wind guard
- Adjustable regulator
- Supports up to 20 gallons
Although this little guy can put out a decent BTU count, it does sacrifice in other areas. It can easily heat a 20-gallon batch, but it may not do as well handling the weight. It isn’t going to collapse, but it isn’t as sturdy as some of the more expensive models.
Also, the fuel valve is not as accurate as some other brands. You won’t have an issue cranking the heat and then taking it back to keep a boil, but it can’t be as marginally controlled. This means you might have a difficult time keeping specific temperatures. It may not be a big deal to a new brewer, but if you are looking for a particular enzyme breakdown, you may have a difficult time.
- Loose base
- 65,000 BTUs
- Small flame area
- Sits low to the ground
Dark Star Burner 2.0 Review: The Bottom Line
The Dark Star Burner 2.0 is perfect for those making the switch to all-grain brewing. It can support up to a 20-gallon batch, and it has a wind guard for efficient outdoor brewing.
The high BTU output brings water to a boil quickly and will maintain a healthy boil for as long as you need. It does sit low to the ground, as all floor burners do, but you can put it on a table like any other.
It also comes at an extremely affordable price. You will literally spend less than half of the money you would on another leading brew burner.
