MegaPot 1.2 Brew Kettle

Northern Brewer is a well-known brand by home brewers. They provide everything you need to brew at home and transition into a small batch brewery. Northern Brewer has made available simple and deluxe brew kits, but they also sell equipment separately.

The MegaPot 1.2 is a reputable brew kettle with over 20,000 sold. It is stainless steel and features quality components.

MegaPot 1.2: General features

megapot 1.2 brew kettle review

The MegaPot 1.2 is a high-quality brew kettle. It features a stainless steel body with thick walls and a 5 mm-thick bottom. The bottom is designed in a way to aid heat dissipation. It consists of 3 layers of aluminum being between layers of stainless steel. This is a cool feature because it reduces the risk of applying too much direct heat.

MegaPot models are available with or without ball valves, thermometers, and false bottoms. This is nice if you are on a limited budget. The ball valve is a great feature as it allows you to transfer liquid easily and is designed to last maintaining a leak-free seal. It is also easy to take apart for cleaning purposes.

The optional thermometer attached to the MegaPot 1.2 is also a convenient tool. It is integrated into the outside lower wall just above the valve. This is a good placement for temperature readings as it measures in the center of the wort resulting in a more accurate reading.

In some cases, you may not require a mash tun. However, if you do, the addition of a false bottom would double this brew kettle as such. False bottoms are an optional feature for all kettle sizes.

The MegaPot 1.2 also includes a graduated level, etched onto the inside of the kettle, and hollow handles with rubber grips. The same handle design and grip are also on the glass lid.

Any Shortfalls?

The most significant issue with the MegaPot 1.2 is the weight. The thicker walls and layered bottom make it quite heavy. This may not be a good option if you have to fill and then move the kettle.

The graduated level is nice, but it only includes marks at each gallon. It would be nice to have the ability to measure by quart. Also, the MegaPot 1.2 does not include a cleaning brush or limited warranty like the Blichmann BoilerMaker G2 does. For other additional options, see this page here:

MegaPot 1.2 Review: The Bottom Line

The MegaPot 1.2 is a quality brew kettle. It is customizable and can be purchased to serve your specific needs. If you choose to add additional features later, Northern Brewer offers accessories separately as well.

The integrated thermometer design is nice too because it gives you a more accurate reading than the top of the wort will. This is important when you are trying to micromanage temps for specific enzymes.

Personally, the weight doesn’t seem like a big issue to me. If you have been brewing for a while, chances are you have figured out a way to fill your kettle on the burner.

Whether you are looking to start home brewing or just want to upgrade your equipment, the MegaPot 1.2 is a solid choice.
