Red Baron Bottle Capper Review

Red Baron Bottle Capper Review

So you have successfully navigated the home brew minefield and emerged with a batch you can be proud of. Congrats! Now it’s time to move it from the fermenter to the bottles you have meticulously cleaned and labeled and have all lined up ready to go. Then, of course, once your beer is in the bottles, you’ll need to cap them.

The Red Baron Bottle Capper is a double lever, gull-wing style pull-down capper designed to work with any standard 26mm bottle cap. It’s popular with the homebrew community, so it’s worth looking at it in detail to see if it’s right for you.

Red Baron Bottle Capper: General Features

Bottle CapperThe Red Baron Capper is old school tech that installs old school caps on your bottles of homebrew. That means this is not meant for twist-off bottle caps. That’s fine, since homebrewing is an old-school practice and caps that need to be lifted with an opener fit right into the whole ethos.

The Red Baron Bottle Capper sports an awkward-looking but very efficient gull-wing design. Once you’ve had a bit of practice, it’s incredibly easy and quick to use. The cap is held in place with a magnet, so there is no chasing fallen caps around on the floor.

It works with any 26mm caps on any standard 12, 22, 24, 32 or 40-ounce bottles regardless of whether they’re clear, brown, green or whatever.

The handles of the Red Baron Cap machine are easy to get a solid hold of and don’t require you to apply dangerous levels of force in order to secure the cap. That’s good because you don’t want your bottle flying off and shattering on the floor while you’re trying to cap it.

Some might worry about having handles that are made out of plastic, but there’s no reason for concern. These are not your ordinary cheap plastic appendages.  They’re heavy and rugged, and are designed to withstand whatever force you’re bringing to bear. In addition, all the connectors are metal.

  • Works with any standard non-screw top bottle.
  • Robust construction is not going to wilt under pressure.
  • Magnet holds the cap in place while you install it.
  • Cost less than a pizza.

Any Shortfalls?

Red Baron CapperOf course, there is no such thing as a perfect product, and the Red Baron Capper is no exception. However, for what you’re going to pay, there is really nothing here that’s a deal breaker.

Perhaps the biggest issue is acquiring a certain sense of ease with the device. Some will take to it quickly while others may find the process a bit unwieldy. Still, with a little bit of practice, there is no reason everyone can’t master the Red Baron Bottle Capper. And once they do, it will serve them well for years to come.

Another potential downside (although this has nothing to do with the Baron and everything to do with the person that buys it) is thinking the Red Baron Bottle Capper will handle twist on caps. It won’t, as we said earlier. This is strictly for old school bottle-opener-required caps. Don’t make the mistake of purchasing a hundred twist-top bottles along with the Red Baron cap machine. See our main guide for a bottle capper that can handle twist tops:

Just remember not to bring too much force down on the bottle while capping with the Red Baron Capper. The device is quite capable of doing most of the work itself.

Red Baron Bottle Capper Review: Is It Worth Buying?

Bottle Capper previewMost homebrewers are working with limited space and a limited budget. They need to be creative when it comes to deploying resources of space and money, which means they need to constantly be on the lookout for value.

That’s exactly what the Red Baron Bottle Capper is: an outstanding value. You can pay a lot more for all types of mechanical devices to cap your beer bottles. But, unless you work with such volumes that more time-sensitive methods are required, the Red Baron Capper should fulfill your needs and leave you with plenty of money to put towards other things.

At the end of the day, the Red Baron Bottle Capper is a product we would highly recommend to any homebrewer. It’s reliable, durable, easy to learn, easy to use and incredibly affordable.
